It does take more of an investment to do this kind of building but the benefits far ought weigh the costs over the life of the house. There are many ways to build green and an energy efficient house, but it all starts with the design and a commitment from the owner. A local engineer showed me that by adding 10 to 15% in the costs to build a house with better and longer lasting products will reduce the overall operating costs of a house over a 8o year life span by 50%. Modern facts are beginning to bear this out.
New appraisal standards are being considered to allow energy efficient applications to increased appraised value. These improvements will also help sell a house in the future and banks may consider lower mortgage rates for energy efficient houses.
