Additions
Additions are what make basic houses special. Each addition that has been built over the years had a specific purpose initially. We have built additions that have only been the size of a closet or an entire wing on the side; but they all were designed to help the current owner make the structure more user friendly, functional and of course beautiful.
Initially, the original log cabin had a multipurpose approach. The early settlers built additions to expand the family. Now we need rooms for everything; theaters, exercise rooms, wine vaults, office, library, in-law suites, game rooms…
Some additions look like the original house and it is hard to tell what is old and new; some stand out like sore thumbs. As a farmer began to prosper, he would build a bigger house attached to the old one. The original house would look like a single story addition. The typical L-shaped house got longer with additions to accommodate growing families. Need another space, throw it on the back.
As utilities came along, indoor plumbing brought rise to bathrooms and bath additions. Original bathrooms are very small and sometimes difficult to use. Many of our addition projects involve expanding the master bedroom with a new bathroom. Then the old bath becomes part of the closets. This is been a very popular way to add on and increase equity, instantly sometimes.
The design of an addition can make or break a house. Make all the mistakes on paper first, get it right, then proceed. Do it right the first time and not on the cheap or you will be doing something over before your know it. It is a proven fact that better quality materials and installations last longer and provide many years of trouble free service.
